A hybrid system from Volvo Penta, based on the brand's top-class IPS propulsion, has appeared on the horizon! The innovation is a joint development between Volvo Penta and Danish electric system experts Danfoss Editron. It is expected to enter service in 2021.

APPLICATION

In short, the system is a combination of Volvo Penta's integrated electric IPS systems, high-tech generator sets, and overall vessel control systems. It was developed for the Danish transport vessel manufacturer MHO&Co and will be used by one of the world's largest wind farm operators.

The project is strictly a pilot program and will not be available for commercial sale to other vessel manufacturers at this time. The innovative Volvo Penta hybrid system will be used in two 112-foot crew transfer vessels. Their mission will be to transport personnel to and from the wind farm daily. This is why the most efficient, eco-friendly, and low-cost option was sought.

Each of the vessels has a capacity of 24 people. They will travel between 89 and 120 km from the Yorkshire coast in the North Sea. The main goal is to achieve maximum maneuverability, maximum electric system efficiency, and maximum battery endurance.

A NEW ERA

Volvo Penta's IPS propulsion is, in itself, an innovation in the shipping industry. The electric version takes the development to a whole new level. The system operates with four transmissions, two of which are powered by Volvo Penta D13 diesel engines. The other two run on Danfoss Editron electric machines, which are in turn powered by Volvo Penta D8 generators.

Until now, electric systems and motors were too bulky to be used for crew transfer vessels. The project by Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron is lightweight and compact, making it suitable for this class of vessel, as well as many other types of ships. The two prototypes will be able to operate fully on electric power at lower speeds or in hybrid mode.

The pilot project has the potential to attract more manufacturers to hybrid propulsion, which in turn could increase the environmental sustainability of shipping in general.
