Parking a car can be a challenge for drivers in big cities. Now imagine that challenge multiplied by... a lot! And a tiny mistake can turn out to be much more expensive than a scratched bumper or a dented fender.

Vessels, from motorboats to large catamarans, never stand still. They require careful and specific navigation that combines not only the relative location of objects. The environment must also be taken into account – sea swell, wind...

Back in 2003, Volvo Penta launched a revolutionary tool called Electronic Vessel Control (EVC). Its purpose was to help with easier vessel handling. The second version included improved diagnostics (on-board and remote) and full system control. The entire operation was moved to a configuration of a control lever and a display.

The innovation of Volvo Penta Assisted Docking lies in the fact that it combines the EVC system's controls with the surrounding environment. This means easier and more precise navigation in a complex environment.

"Assisted Docking is a hybrid between automatic and manual docking. And although in some respects it would have been easier to create full automation, the beauty of this system is that it gives the captain better control. We made it to act intuitively in all situations so that everyone can feel like an experienced captain," commented Ida Sparrefors, Director of Autonomous Solutions at Volvo Penta.

Who will enjoy Volvo Penta Assisted Docking?

As early as this spring, the company plans to start including the new system in new boat and yacht models that it equips. Customers with IPS yachts between 35 and 120 feet will have the opportunity to upgrade their systems. An integrated Assisted Docking system will be offered directly to manufacturers.
