The new Volvo Penta Joystick Driving control system won this year’s IBEX (International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference - the largest international event for boatbuilders in North America) Innovation Award in the propulsion and parts category. The system beat out competition from 94 other nominees to receive the award in Tampa, Florida.

"Joystick control has been part of boating for a long time, but until now it was used primarily for docking, and Volvo Penta has reached new heights with the innovative ability to steer the boat without touching the steering wheel. The system integrates shifting, steering, and throttle and is easily mounted in the driver's armrest for ergonomics and comfort," noted IBEX judge Steve Davis.

"Since its premiere earlier this year, Joystick Driving has been receiving positive feedback, and we are extremely honored to win an IBEX award for one of our heroic innovations. About Volvo Penta Joystick Driving

The Volvo Penta Joystick Driving control system was introduced in the spring of 2023. It builds upon the classic Volvo Penta Joystick with the integration of throttle/shift, allowing for one-handed operation. To accelerate, you push the stick forward and return it to the neutral position to maintain speed. Pulling it back reduces speed.

The system can be installed on boats of various sizes, including commercial vessels. If the integrated Joystick Steering system is already present with the EVC 2 electronic system, the upgrade is direct. For other users, a pre-installation of the Volvo Penta autopilot and display may be required.

About the IBEX Innovation Awards

The IBEX Innovation Award has been recognizing the most advanced projects for 20 years. It is presented by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, and the jury includes journalists and authors. The awards are presented in 15 different categories.

For Volvo Penta, this is far from their first IBEX honor. In 2021, the Assisted Docking system was among the awarded projects, and in 2019, the new generation of D4 and D6 systems also received an award.
